Google Hot Trends

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

What a fun thing I found today.

Have you ever wondered what people were searching for online? You would probably guess that they were searching for things similar to what you search for. Hmmm…no, not really.

I usually search for things that have nothing to do with TV, or any entertainment for that matter. Well, that’s not true for the rest of America.

Check out Google Hot Trends to see if your searches are remotely close to what other people are looking for online.

Sitemap Location in Robots.txt

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Yesterday, I was updating my website sitemaps in Yahoo! Site Explorer and came across a post in their blog called, “Webmasters Can Now Auto-Discover With Sitemaps.”

This got me thinking, so I did a little more homework. Basically, this semi-new feature allows search engines to auto-discover website’s sitemaps. The syntax looks like this…

Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

All you have to do is to add this line to your robots.txt file, or course, with your URL inserted instead of the example one above. This helps, because there are many search engines that now recognize Google sitemaps, but have no idea where yours is. Ask.com is a big one.

I found some resources and decided to list them here for you…

- Sitemap hint in robots.txt
- Sitemaps XML format
- What’s new with Sitemaps.org?
- Robots.txt Checker

Google Buys FeedBurner?

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Weird. I hadn’t heard about this. I was reading my latest issue of Revenue Magazine the other day and I came across an article letting me in on the big secret. It said that they made the deal back in June. I did a little Google search and came across a few articles covering the issue.

I wandered over to the Official Google Blog and found the official statement from Susan Wojcicki, VP of Product Management. She said that Google is looking for more avenues to distribute ads for that AdWords customers.

I would say this is a very smart move, considering that Google is working on getting ads into website feeds. I have been waiting for that one for a while.

So, let’s wait and see what FeedBurner starts to shape up like. I always like to see the changes and enhancements to a product when something like this happens.

Readers of Google’s Custom Search Blog were handed a bit of a surprise Tuesday when the Web site was temporarily removed from the blogosphere and hijacked by someone unaffiliated with the company. The Right Way To Fix Inaccurate Wikipedia Articles

When people see something wrong in Wikipedia they usually consider only 2 solutions: edit the article or sit on their hands. Unfortunately, neither approach typically results in the optimal outcome: a factually accurate profile containing trustworthy information. Offending People by What You Write on Your Blog

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Sometimes I write and write. I think I used to write a heck of a lot more than I do now. I mean, when I first started out with this blog, I think I used to write longer posts. Now, I write more, but shorter ones. How do you say that? More, but shorter?

There are many times when I come across information in news stories or other blogs that I flip though. There may be something that catches my eye…something I find kind of funny. It may be because I deal with a bunch of buttheads all day long or something like that. Sometimes my sensitivity meter is off. The story that I may have found amusing isn’t always all that amusing to others. Really though, most of the time they are pretty amusing. I probably have a pretty thick skin for these types of things because I am super exposed to them.

Well folks, we have to be careful. I mean, what we write really is our business, but like any other sort of media, people are reading our business. We can go day in and day out and choose to write what we want and ignore any comment that someone throws our way, but there might come a time when you say to yourself, “Hey, where did all my readers go?” Well, I suppose you may have a whole new breed of reader visiting your blog, but it was those faithful ones back in the beginning who really are the ones who matter most.

I now have over 320 posts written on this blog in under a year. I have only had to remove one post and slightly edit another. Neither of them were that bad, but when I hear even an inkling of dissatisfaction, I correct whatever is bothering someone. If I don’t like the person, I just ignore them. That’s not such a bad track record, right? Even newspapers get it wrong sometimes and they have full time editors. I am just a one man show. I have the strength of one million men, but still, I am just a guy.

This evening, I did a little Google search for “offending people on blogs.” Interestingly, there wasn’t much offered. I did find a nice post called, “3 Ways To Offend Readers and 4 Ways Not To.” There was a super duper link in there called, “Seven Reasons Not To Post To Your Blog.” It made me feel pretty good that there are people out there who have at least thought of the same stuff as I have and have had to deal with it as well.

Let’s face it, writing on blogs is fun. That might be why there are so many new ones popping up every day. Reading blogs is fun too. They really have become an integral part of people’s lives. It might be a good idea to get back to what we started in the first place, and that’s writing for our readers.

The Dukes of Hazzard Fan Club

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

For our television enjoyment, we had satellite service installed way back when we moved in. I remember it was a Thursday. With this, comes a bunch of channels we don’t use, but there are a few channels that I come across that have something that makes me pause. One such channel has the “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns showing a few times a day, every day.

I always liked the Dukes of Hazzard. It was sort of like the little boy’s version of “Little House on the Prairie.” My brother and I had this little thing going…we would want to know which car was faster, the General Lee or Kitt from “Night Rider.” Personally, I think Kitt is faster, with the Turbo Boost and all.

Anyway, today I was watching “Beauty and the Geek” and I discovered that one of the “Geeks” is the vice-president of a Dukes of Hazzard fan club. I thought this was pretty interesting, so I searched Google for his smiling face. I couldn’t find it, but I did find this pretty exciting fan club. Luckily they came up first in the search results. I didn’t go too far down the page. I looked on their “Fan Club Bios” page, but didn’t see any geek from the TV show. Oh well, you should take a look anyway.

A Reason To Believe…Or Not

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

I have always admired people who can explain things much better than me. When I try to explain something that’s on my mind, I usually get so frustrated that I give up or move on to something else.

Ok, I was searching Google and (for the first time) a YouTube video came up. I clicked it, probably because I was bored. I saw this dude talking about something and I almost clicked back. He kind of reminded me of my cousin Benjamin. I sat and listened for a little while and decided that I would post his video. I feel like this guy deserves some kind of recognition for making a video in the spirit of what YouTube was originally created for. So, here it is.

AdSense Allowing Publishers 3 Link Units Per Page

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

I don’t know where the heck I’ve been. I am usually on top of these types of things.

Well, anyway, I was fiddling around with my blog last night and I noticed that I had accidentally placed more than one AdSense link unit on one of my pages. The strange thing is that it showed up. I was a bit puzzled, so I checked the set up page and well, well, well. It now states that publishers are allow three link units per page.

I did a Google search on it and found this guy saying the same thing. He seems like a nice guy, right?

A 2006 Wrap Up

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

I remember the day, January 1, 2006. I was sitting on the floor sulking. I had no idea what I was going to do this year. I knew I wanted to launch some more websites, but I was out of ideas. I already had PetClassifieds.US, CycleClassifieds.US, BoatClassifieds.US, MotoClassifieds.US and TemplateMarket.US. What more could be done? I was out of it.

Then, one day I noticed that my very generic domain name and one page website for WebClassifieds.US had been listed in DMOZ. Ok, wow. That was a shock. I wasn’t even sure that site was alive any more. Well, it was, and that listing put my domain name into the all important Google Directory. Now that WebClassifieds.US had just gone up in value, I decided to create another general classified site there. That took a few weeks.

Well, now what? Ok, I picked up some ideas throughout the year and made a few more sites…like around 16 of them. Here is a list:

  • MyAutoMarket.US
  • MyBabyMarket.US
  • MyBeautyMarket.US
  • MyBoatMarket.US
  • MyBookMarket.US
  • MyCycleMarket.US
  • MyGardenMarket.US
  • MyHealthMarket.US
  • MyHomeMarket.US
  • MyKitchenMarket.US
  • MyMediaMarket.US
  • MyPetMarket.US
  • MySportsMarket.US
  • UpMyAlley.US
  • Also, I needed a place to put all my dot US websites, so…dotusnetwork.com. Lastly, somewhere along the lines I got the grand ol’ idea for a RSS Feed Directory. Yeah, uh huh. I feel a little better.

That’s the thing with me. I get really bored really fast. I always think I am going to accomplish nothing but actually finish ahead of schedule. Well, this brings me to a little issue. Now that it is December 16 and almost 2007, I am kind of out of ideas for stuff for the new year ahead. I either need to partner up with some rich dude and pump some marketing money and new servers into this stuff or just keep making sites. Suggestions?
