Certified Humane Eggs At Costco

Friday, February 6th, 2009

A while ago, I developed an aversion to eating eggs that were brought to us by cramped, hormone filled and overly lit . I don’t know, it’s just a personal thing, I guess.

It used to be tough to find “free range, vegetarian fed, organic” hen eggs up until a few years ago. Something must have changed, because they seem to be all over the place now. I think I am not alone in my aversion any more.

We usually purchase two when we visit Costco up in Enfield, CT. I forget what brand we get, but it’s a two-pack and says all the stuff I want to see on the cartons (the stuff I mentioned above). Now, if you have ever shopped at Costco, you know that inventory changes quite radically. What you find one day, you may never find again. That was the case yesterday.

When we arrived at Costco’s egg section, I was disappointed to find no more two-packs. All I could find were a whole load of 18- that said “Certified Humane – Raised & Handled.” They were being sold under the Kirkland brand (Costco).

I called over to my lady and said, “Hey cutie pie, what does this “Certified Humane” mean? Is it what I think it is or is it just another sneaky fabrication? She didn’t know, so we made a . We bought 36 eggs with a promise that we would research the topic.

I am happy to report that we purchased eggs that were not offered up by abused and tortured . I found a press release on the “Certified Humane” label this morning. Check it out.

2008 BMW X5 Trip Computer – iDrive

Friday, February 6th, 2009

I recently made a little vow to myself that I would try to learn more about this BMW iDrive that I encounter every time I drive around. It is quite the computer system and it has a lot to offer. The only problem is that it has a lot to offer. I know, I just said that. I am a “get in the car and drive” kind of guy, so this whole iDrive thing goes a little against my grain.

I guess my grain is changing, because I started fiddling with some stuff the other day. I came across a really cool feature that I have been playing with ever since. It’s the “.” I am sure lots of have this, but since this is my first experience with one, I though I would share it with you.

Basically, I clicked the “Menu” button and then “Car Data.” From there, I visited the “.” There are three options…Start, Stop and Reset. Since there was already data stored in there, I chose reset and then start. I think they do the same thing. Then, I drove for a little while. It was really cool.

Yesterday, we went to Costco in , CT. I thought that the trip would be a great opportunity to show Laura the new feature I discovered. As it ends up, she didn’t express all that much interest in it. Actually, I suspect she is wondering why anyone would spend any amount of time making this feature in the first place. Funny how people like different things.

I left the house and set the up. When we arrived at our destination, I took a photo.

As you can see from the photos above, the tells you the departure time, the trip duration, the distance traveled, the average and the average miles per hour.

The area I like the best is the average . While I the highway, we were averaging over 21 miles per gallon, but things got worse when we turned on the . The stop and go doesn’t do any favors. The sales guy said that some people report over 23 miles per gallon on the highway.

Now, let me assure you that this type of doesn’t really excite me. What does excite me is that BMW introduced its new engines into the market this year. The X5 is getting 26 MPG on the highway with the engine and the gets up to 36 MPG. Now, that’s something that excites me. I just wonder how they handle the whole “ fuel gelling up on really cold mornings” issue.

New Bose Companion® 2 Series II Multimedia Computer Speakers

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Boy, that title is pretty long.

Yesterday, Laura and I went shopping. We first went up to in Enfield, CT. I got a bunch of stuff, most of which I can hardly remember right now. I am sure I’ll write about it when I start using it.

Then, we went to Circuit City and got some stuff. After that, we went to Costco for food shopping. Just to let you know, Costco in Enfield has a gas station for members. Gas around here is $4.39 per gallon. I paid $4.05 yesterday at the Costco gas station. It averages about 30 cents less per gallon than regular gas stations.

Back to Circuit City. While there, I picked up some that I am going to use for the new downstairs. I also picked up some new speakers. The speakers I was using up until yesterday were Altec Lansing and getting pretty old. I gave them to Laura as a hand-me-down. I got a hand-me-up to the new Bose Companion® 2 Series II Multimedia Speakers.

When I was looking at them in the store, I kept asking the guy (kid) if they had an amp in them. I was worried that they might be like those cheap Dell speakers you get with a new . You should probably have someone standing next to you hitting two pans together than using those Dell speakers. Man, if I had a nickle for every pair of them I threw away.

He never gave me an answer. He just kept saying that these Bose speakers were the best brand they had in the store. Since I never quite got an answer out of him, I just bought them and decided that I would return them if they were horrible.

I got home and hooked them up. Right after that, I hooked up the Altec Lansings to Laura’s , which made her very happy. Now she can pump the bass. Back to my speakers. I turned on Media Player and was quite impressed. All that stuff Bose says about themselves is pretty true. The speakers are very clear and I can now hear sounds I never heard out of my old speakers. It’s pretty amazing what they can do with half the size and weight of something.

Costco Wholesale in Enfield, CT

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

We took the leap. The leap to Costco (finally) up in Enfield, CT…near the border of MA. We have been meaning to do this for a very long time, but never got around to it.

Back at our old house, we were members of Sam’s Club, which is just an extension of Wal-Mart. We got pretty sick of it and didn’t renew our yearly plan. It seemed like there was some sort of stagnation with its stock. My father kept telling me that Costco is much better. I remember Costco from the Danbury location and it was pretty good. My father and I are a little different when it comes to at Costco though. He likes to look at tools and equipment, while I like to look at the heads of lettuce.

One of the main things I was looking for was high quality food, mainly produce, and a big store. We visited BJs in Willimantic earlier in the week and were disappointed. It seemed like an older store and was much smaller than the others. I like to feel like I am in a stadium.

The Enfield Cosco was built in 2004, which means it has all the latest perks, groceries, tire changes, pharmacy, etc…and for those people who need to have dessert while they go food , there is a fast food place. It’s almost sad.

Anyway, membership is $50 and good for a year, so we did it.

Yes, that is the actual Enfield store.

We filled our cart up last night and made out like bandits. I got a 2 1/2 pound bag of and a huge box of veggie burgers, among other things. The prices were pretty good, but you can never really tell. On some stuff, they are definitely better. On other stuff, it’s a little tricky. The good thing is that we don’t need to keep running out to the grocery store for every little thing, like we used to. Now, we just load up the trunk and that’s that. Of course, we are still going to have to go to the regular grocery store for some stuff, but this place helps out a bunch.
