Listening To Pandora On The Droid

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Okay, so last night I figured out how to get some music on my Droid. It’s really easy. If you need help, let me know. Perhaps I will even write a post on how to upload music to the Droid. Who knows. What I do know is that I now have a music player.

This evening (actually just a few minutes ago), I was reading an article about how developers of Droid apps saw an increase in downloads yesterday. One such app that saw a big uptick in downloads is a music player created by Pandora. When I read this, I said, “Hmmm.” I hadn’t really thought much about a music player on a PDA that actually streamed music from the internet. This opens up a whole new world.

I visited Pandora to see what it was all about. Apparently, some geniuses discovered a way to find music that is similar to what you like. Basically, when you visit their homepage, you are asked to type in the name of a song or group that you like. Then, Pandora will find music that is similar to what you typed in and start playing it. I typed in “Days of the New” and was happy to hear “Alice In Chains” and “Stone Temple Pilots.” After that, I heard some Days of the New. Where have I been? How long has this site been out there? It’s pretty awesome.

I haven’t tried to play any music on the Droid from Pandora yet. I downloaded the app and was warned that this service downloads some pretty hefty data, so I should be sure that I am on an unlimited data plan. I know I am, but I am going to give a call over to Verizon tomorrow just to make sure. Can you imagine listening to music that streams from the internet on a cell phone? Now, can you imagine that this music is what you actually like? That’s huge.

Trolling, Flamebait, Birthers?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

If there is one thing I love, it’s all the stupid words that internet users make up for silly people and silly occurrences. Seriously, I do love them because they are quite entertaining.

There is this web forum that I visit pretty frequently. It’s hosted by one of the developers who created some of the web software that I use. It’s fairly informative and insightful, but from time to time, there are posts made by people whos only intention is to get a rise out of some other members. I never really liked these posts because they seemed childish and really made the poster look like an idiot. The “back and forth” was like two fools teasing each other on the playground.

Typically, when these members start their shenanigans, the moderator steps in to shut things down. He also has to do a little yelling at these guys. It’s so stupid. The people writing these posts are like forty years old…an age that you would expect more from.

A few weeks ago, someone wrote a post that ticked someone else off. The moderator stepped in a called the person who wrote it a “troll” and that he was “trolling.” I got a little chuckle out of this and looked at Wikipedia to see what in the world trolling was. You can click the link above to see for yourself.

A few days ago, another damn fool wrote something stupid that was obviously intended to provoke a response from another member. This time, when the moderator shut the thread down, he said that the member had used “flamebait” to start an argument. I thought that one was really funny. Where the heck do these guys get these words from?

I thought the words were funny, but what was even more funny is that the moderator was throwing them out there so casually. I love it. I never even heard of these things. I guess it’s sort of like the whole “LOL” thing.

Here’s another one – “Birthers.” This one ticks me off. Apparently, this is what we now call people who don’t believe Barack Obama was born in the USA. I mean, couldn’t you make up a better name for these guys. Birthers? That sounds totally freakin’ dumb. I can’t even think of a better name. Maybe someone should ask the guy who made up flamebait. At least we could get something funny out of it.

Windows Vista vs. Windows 7

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I was just reading an article on how Windows Vista may have affected Microsoft’s earnings in 2008. The article didn’t blame Vista per se, but it did blame Vista, Windows XP and the sale (or lack thereof) of computers due to the lagging economy. As everyone most likely already knows, most of the sales of computer operating systems are tied to the sales of computers, because the operating systems come installed on the computers. When computers don’t sell, neither do the operating systems.

The article talked about how people were generally dissatisfied with Windows Vista and that may have been taking its toll on computer sales. In other words, people were willing to stick it out with Windows XP and an older computer, until a new operating system is released. They said that many computer users are waiting for the release of Windows 7. This is what I found interesting…

Here is my logic: If people didn’t want Vista in the first place and were willing to keep an older operating system, how is a new operating system going to fix the problem?

As far as I know, there really isn’t all too much of a pull for a new version of Windows. I totally understand the need to come up with new and better products, but a new version of an operating system every few years isn’t really necessary. Especially when so many users out there are perfectly willing to use an older one. Why not build on that one?

Here is a disclaimer: I have absolutely no reason to believe I know what I am talking about when it comes to the inner workings of software. I am merely stating simple observations.

So here is my question: Has anyone taken an in-depth look at Windows 7? From what I can tell, it looks a lot like other versions of Windows, with things arranged differently, along with some new icons. I am sure the developers over at Microsoft would like to slap me for saying that. I wouldn’t mind someone familiar with the system to comment.
