Justa Rollin’ Right Along

Costco Wholesale in Enfield, CT

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

We took the leap. The leap to Costco (finally) up in Enfield, …near the border of MA. We have been meaning to do this for a very long time, but never got around to it.

Back at our old house, we were members of Sam’s Club, which is just an extension of Wal-Mart. We got pretty sick of it and didn’t renew our yearly plan. It seemed like there was some sort of stagnation with its stock. My father kept telling me that Costco is much better. I remember Costco from the location and it was pretty good. My father and I are a little different when it comes to at Costco though. He likes to look at tools and equipment, while I like to look at the heads of lettuce.

One of the main things I was looking for was high quality food, mainly produce, and a big store. We visited BJs in Willimantic earlier in the week and were disappointed. It seemed like an older store and was much smaller than the others. I like to feel like I am in a stadium.

The Enfield Cosco was built in 2004, which means it has all the latest perks, , tire changes, pharmacy, etc…and for those people who need to have while they go , there is a fast food place. It’s almost sad.

Anyway, membership is $50 and good for a year, so we did it.

Yes, that is the actual Enfield store.

We filled our cart up last night and made out like bandits. I got a 2 1/2 pound bag of and a huge box of veggie burgers, among other things. The prices were pretty good, but you can never really tell. On some stuff, they are definitely better. On other stuff, it’s a little tricky. The good thing is that we don’t need to keep running out to the grocery store for every little thing, like we used to. Now, we just load up the trunk and that’s that. Of course, we are still going to have to go to the regular grocery store for some stuff, but this place helps out a bunch.

Panda House in Danbury, CT

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Laura and I went out for Sushi at the Panda House in Danbury, CT tonight. This Chinese/Japanese is, by far, our favorite place. We have been to quite a few restaurants, so we know what’s good and what is being charged too much for. Usually, we are getting ripped off…especially that place up on Rt.9 in Poughkeepsie. I am not going to name names, but if you have been there, you know they have some skinny . Nobody likes skinny .

Actually, we don’t get the , we get the Maki-zushi (roll).

Today is cause for celebration, so we wanted to go out to Dave & Busters down in the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack. They were calling for snow (which it is doing right now), so we had to call everyone to tell them to stay home. That was a drag. Then, we got an idea. Since we could go get much earlier than we were going to go to Dave & Busters, we may miss the snow. That was a good idea. As we were sitting in Panda House, enjoying our with two friends, it started to snow. It snowed all through dinner. I wasn’t all that nervous, because it looked like it was melting as it hit the ground. We were more than an hour from home, so it did concern me a bit.

We finished up dinner and left. We made it home in good time without event, except for that car going 30MPH on Interstate 84. We had a nice dinner too.

It was a great day. Unfortunately, I took these videos with my old camera. They are kind of pixelated and there is no sound. You get the idea.

Wandering Home – By Bill McKibben

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Ahhh…my first audio book. I don’t know how Laura finds these things, but she does.

I like to think of her sitting at her computer, very studiously analyzing and contemplating my psyche. “Who is Jay?” she would ask herself. “What makes this guy tick?” In actuality, she probably sees what is popular that day on Amazon, but we try not to think about that.

I can’t get over the clarity of the new stereo I installed in my car today. Just a moment ago, I walked outside, across the driveway to it. I sat down in the driver’s seat and turned the key. The radio came on so I could hear 95.5 WPLJ, down in the city. I changed the channel to 100.3 Z100. It’s remarkable how clear the radio receives the signal. My old one never did that.

I opened the package of the audio book, “Wandering Home – A Long Walk Across America’s Most Hopeful Landscape: Vermont’s Champlain Valley and New York’s Adirondacks,” by Bill McKibben. I really didn’t know what to expect. My mother has been raving about audiobooks ever since she lived back in my home town. I think they helped make her drive everyday to work in Danbury a little bit easier. She used to say, “My car can steer itself on the trip to work. That’s how used to it I am.” I think she really believed that at times. Well, when she told the story, she sounded very convincing.

I pushed the CD in the brand new slot. Everything is so shiny. The radio stopped and the CD started. A very faint, but clean guitar sound started. It got louder, and then a very soothing voice, that introduced himself as the author, Bill McKibben, began to speak. I though, “Ooh, this is going to be good. I listened for a few minutes and turned the key back, so the sound stopped. I didn’t want to ruin the first part of the story during a time when I wasn’t focusing on it. I turned the key forward, so the CD turned on again. Yup, it picked up right where it left off. This was going to work out fine.

So what’s the story about? Well, Bill’s website tells it like this…

“The acclaimed author of The End of Nature takes a three-week walk from his current home in to his former home in the and reflects on the deep hope he finds in the two landscapes.”

That’s not all, you can read the rest here.

As you can see, I am quite excited about using my frontal lobe even more than I currently am. It is going to be nice to break out of the mold of NPR and bad local radio. Yeah, it’s going to be nice.
