If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing “Charlie The Unicorn” yet, I suggest you do. I am embedding the video from YouTube below. This is a very odd video, and like all odd videos, you need to see it a few times to see the humor of it all. It’s kind of like Napoleon Dynamite. You can’t just watch that movie once. We have probably seen it over ten times…kind of like this damn Charlie video. Although, I will mention that as weird as it is, it’s been viewed tons of times, so that says something.

Here goes…

I was going to call this post, “My Mini-Garden.” Then, I thought of the word “micro” and figured that it sounded much more “green” and “organic,” so I used that. Now I can be like those hippie folk up in Ithaca who live in their “ecovillage.” All I need now is a guitar and a little chair.

Okay, the truth of the matter is that Laura found a squirrel sitting in the bucket where my strawberry plant is planted. He was sitting there, not eating strawberries, but eating the actual plant. We have some very badly behaved squirrels. Very bad indeed. I knew where this was headed, so I had to do something.

I walked around the yard and found all the scrap wood I could muster up. Then, I ran out to the hardware store and got some of that rabbit (or whatever it is) fencing and got to work. After a few hours, this is what I cam up with…

I know it isn’t perfect, but I needed to figure out something fast on such short notice. I didn’t think the squirrels would actually eat the plants. Geez.

The fencing is stapled nice and tight to the sides. The top part is just a piece of fencing held down by bungee cords. I think it’ll be okay.

I have a feeling it’s going to get mighty crowded in that little garden, but at least I won’t have any issues with the vermin. Next year, I think I will limit my little mini-garden to just strawberries.

On the way to my class this morning, I decided to call Rob. I pulled his name up on my phone and listened to it ring. After a few rings, I got his voicemail. I know he sent me to voicemail, but I’ll save that for a conversation between just the two of us.

Even though I got sent to voicemail by Robert (I was wicked perturbed), I still decided to leave him a message. I said something like, “Hey Beeeatch…I’m just calling to say — HOLY MOTHER, LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT TURTLE!!!” That’s right folks, my wonderful message got all screwed up by a gigantic snapping turtle sitting on the side of the road. I hung up the phone and pulled over to get some pictures of it. I knew Rob would understand. After all, he is a turtle hunter (catch and release).

It’s that time of year again. Time to take a whole bunch of pictures of the baby birds living under the porch and see which ones come out okay.

I was wondering if these bird families were going to come back this year. Well, they are probably new families, but you get the picture. We have three nests under the porch (two are occupied) and one in the front of the house in a small pine tree. The two occupied nests under the porch have baby chicks and the nest in the front of the house has four little eggs. They are really cool.

Take a look at the photos.

Weighing in at more than a quarter of a tonne, the world’s largest hanging basket is certainly going to require a lot of watering. The giant eye-catching floral spectacular measures 20ft by 10ft and took a massive EIGHT hours to winch into position.

10 Incredible Living Walls

The idea of a living wall conjures up all sorts of images, but in reality it is nothing more than a wall completely covered in vegetation. This form of urban gardening is often designed as an art form to decorate buildings in cities and has been hailed as one way to make cities more enjoyable, healthier and ultimately greener places.

Eating You Alive? Try Eco-Friendly Garden Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

There are attractive garden plants that repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are horrible creatures that swarm around you and suck your blood. They cause itchy rashes and can carry disease. If you are interested in a more natural approach, consider these plants that will keep those pesky creatures far away!

Grow your own food and save money. “The square-foot gardening concept is simple: Build a raised bed, divide the space into sections of one square-foot each, and then plant vegetables (and/or flowers) in just the amount of space they need…

I’m not sure if I am using the correct terminology here. I am not talking about some sortable photo gallery plug-in with tons of features. What I am talking about it the “Gallery” feature that comes with the Wordpress package that allows you to place thumbnails into your post.

I just found this today. I know, I am probably the last person on earth to realize this was even available. I was going through an old post about Luray, VA. My brother took a bunch of photos a while back that I posted here. Basically, I wanted people to see what the area looked like. I noticed that I didn’t put any captions in the photos, so I clicked the “Add an image” button, just to see if those photos were stored somehow. They were and there were a few tabs that I hadn’t noticed before in the pop-up window. One of them said, “Gallery.” Mind you, this tab only appears if there are photos already uploaded.

I clicked the link and saw all the photos. Each photo had a link next to it that showed its properties. I still had the option of adding captions and all that. At the bottom of the list of photos, I noticed some neat little options that let you post all of the uploaded photos for that post as a gallery. How sweet. I chose the number of columns I wanted to see in my post, the order of the photos, how I wanted each photo to show when it was clicked and hit “Insert gallery.”

Take a look below for an example gallery. I found some random pet photos to post. Be sure to click each photo for a larger view.

What is the benefit of putting your photos in gallery form? Well, for one, your page will load a heck of a lot faster. Also, you will give your readers more of a choice. They can click what they want and ignore the rest. You know, I am all about reader satisfaction.

(Well, this isn’t the greatest example. I had to adjust the “medium” picture size to fit the screen better. Now, you have to options. You can click the thumbnail, which will bring you to a medium sized photo. Then, you can click that photo for a full sized photo. In this post, the medium sized photos are too small. They will be correct in later posts.)

A while ago, I developed an aversion to eating eggs that were brought to us by cramped, hormone filled and overly lit hens. I don’t know, it’s just a personal thing, I guess.

It used to be tough to find “free range, vegetarian fed, organic” hen eggs up until a few years ago. Something must have changed, because they seem to be all over the place now. I think I am not alone in my aversion any more.

We usually purchase two dozen eggs when we visit Costco up in Enfield, CT. I forget what brand we get, but it’s a two-pack and says all the stuff I want to see on the cartons (the stuff I mentioned above). Now, if you have ever shopped at Costco, you know that inventory changes quite radically. What you find one day, you may never find again. That was the case yesterday.

When we arrived at Costco’s egg section, I was disappointed to find no more two-packs. All I could find were a whole load of 18-egg cartons that said “Certified Humane – Raised & Handled.” They were being sold under the Kirkland brand (Costco).

Certified Humane - Raised and Handled

I called over to my lady and said, “Hey cutie pie, what does this “Certified Humane” mean? Is it what I think it is or is it just another sneaky marketing fabrication? She didn’t know, so we made a leap of faith. We bought 36 eggs with a promise that we would research the topic.

I am happy to report that we purchased eggs that were not offered up by abused and tortured hens. I found a press release on the “Certified Humane” label this morning. Check it out.
