How Fast is Your Broadband Connection?

Since I got this new business class broadband connection (about an hour now), I have noticed a nice increase in internet speed. By the way, I figured out how to set up my static IP address. It really wasn’t hard. Sorry Hannigan, no call today.

Anyway, since I am blazing fast now, I decided to check out my actual upload and download speed. How did I do this? Well, I hopped over to SpeedTest.net and did my thing. You can visit them and follow the very simple instructions to check your own broadband speed. Here, take a look at my results…

I think that’s pretty good, but I don’t have anything to compare it to. I’ve never done this with any of my earlier connections. Now I wish I had. Boy, there’s got to be someone out there who can tell me if thi is fast or not…

You can also check your cable modem status. Open a browser and plug in the correct IP (I think the default is something like 192.168.100.1). That should give you some good info too.

My downstream is limited by my slow old 802.11b wireless to about 3mbit, and my upstream is only about 500 kbit.

I’d say that’s a pretty good performing line that you’ve got relative to what is available here.

I gather I am the someone so here it goes…

Yes download speed very good as well as upload. With regular home cable they basically give you 5-6mb download and 768kb-1mb upload, so you now have 2mb upload, will defintely help out if it stays that high, which I presume it will since its business service.

I could’ve told you how to do that Linksys in my sleep.

What I want to know is why that 2nd modem they gave you is so MONSTEROUS, I thought it was a speaker system you had for the house. Holy crap is that thing huge…you know they make them smaller than your Linksys now, which that even looks like a radio antenna now with all its gadgets and what-not sticking out of it. Does that center part rotate like a GPS antenna on a boat??? That would be cool…

I was thinking the same thing. Actually, that big one is the first one they brought. That is used for both the phone and the internet. I think it’s an RCA…I didn’t even know RCA was in business anymore. Maybe they are trying to get rid of their stock.

The second one is on the bottom. That’s for the business internet and it looks a heck of a lot better.

The Linksys router is right off the shelf. It’s the “N” speed. I have no idea what that middle “dish” is for. I am assuming that if I pulled the router apart, it would be connected to nothing. The signal from that router comes in very strong. Not bad for going through two floors. The guy who hooked up the system said it has a range of about 600 feet.
