HP Laserjet 1018 – Vertical Black Lines – Windows Vista

Posted on September 16, 2007 – 11:50 am by admin

I was showing off last night while trying to print out some nice letterhead that I made. I printed the envelope with no problem, but when I printed out the full 8 1/2″x11″ piece of paper, I got this annoying vertical black line on the right side of the paper.

It seems to be a clear, solid black line, not some fuzzy thing that is caused by physical damage to the toner cartridge. I searched Google for, “laserjet 1018 problem black lines” and came across this good thread about “HP LASERJET 1020 MICROSOFT 64 bit and 32 bit DRIVERS.”

Some other people seem to be having the same problem. I can print from Microsoft Word just fine, but when I add an image, such as a .jpg or a .gif, that’s when I get the line.

People on the thread solved this issue by installing the beta driver. I may do this, but I am hesitant, since the driver is a bit bulky at around 58MB.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Yeah, I just returned the printer. I read some review on Amazon that people were having problems with the HP drivers. Poor guys…they are stuck with the printers because they ordered them online and it would be a pain in the ass to return them. That’s why I get my stuff like this locally. It’s easy to return, if need be.

No need to return your printers. After a few moments on HP’s site with an online technician he fixed it.

Go to the control panel, printers and faxes, rightclick HP LaserJet 1018 and select Printing Preferences.

Go to the Finishing tab. Change the Print Quality from 600 dpi to FastRes 1200. Click ok.

Do a test print. Should work fine and be better quality images too.

This option does use more toner but you’re saving the toner that is printed on the vertical line to the right, so maybe its just about the same amount. Either way, it gets rid of the line.

If that doesn’t work, the tech told me to go to the Basics tab and check the “Rotated” option under orientation. This flips the way things are printed. Instead of the top being the first part feeded in, its the last part… so it prints the page from the bottom up. This wasn’t a required step for me to remove the line but it might be for some which is why I mentioned it.

Hope you all get this working fine. It really is a decent printer for quite cheap.

You can either call tech support or return the printer.

It works perfectly!!! After having printed a first page without any black line, I even succeded in restoring the options I’d had before (600dpi and no rotation)!!! Such a trick and there is no line anymore…

    Gracas a D.

The “rotated” and changing resolution is a workaround that doesn’t fix the issue but avoids it more often then not. I was having this problem with vista home basic for months calling HP till they finally agreed to REFUND my printer. While I was sorting out the REFUND vs. upgrade issue I worked out the following fix. Revert to the ORIGINAL unupdated driver that came with your printer by following these steps precisely you will not fully revert unless you do it this way, trust me I suffered for months. (make sure you have the original software cd available)
    1. open device manager on the control panel
    2. if “printers” is not listed select show hidden devices from the veiw menu.
    3. expand printers and right click hp laserjet 1018
    4. put your installation cd in the drive and here comes the important part…
    5. unplug your internet cable or otherwise PHYSICALLY disconnect your internet access (otherwise it will search online for an updated driver and not install the old one from your CD)
    6. click uninstall and yes you are sure… positive… YES SURE!!!!
7.with your printer powered on unplug your printers usb cable and plug it back in to trigger the plugnplay it will now search and fid the old driver on your CD select the correct language version of the driver (if you are reading this I’ll assume that’s english\HPlj1018or something like that)
it will now install… it worked for me and others who have tried it… now… DONT let auto update update this driver and dont update it manually. it works quite fine even if it isn’t 32/64 bit)

    good luck

PS dont forget to plug your internet cable back in…

I’ve been having the same problem as described here, and am SO glad to have found the suggestion from Craig — MANY thanks! I’ve also just done some searching on HP’s site, and discovered that they have a new printer driver for this very problem … but, sigh, it is for 64-bit versions of Windows, not the 32-bit version of Vista I’m using. I submitted a question to their support folks; they got back to me within 24 hours, but the only suggestion they gave that helped was identical to that in Craig’s message.

I’ve asked if there will be a fix to the printer driver for 32-bit versions of Windows. If anything turns up, I’ll post it here.

    “Ask, and ye shall receive…”

Well, I have already received a reply from HP, saying that indeed a suitable 32-bit driver is available to fix the problem. Note: I’ve just this moment received the following, and haven’t yet had a chance to try it out! Here is what I was told:

Yes, the fix for Windows Vista 32 bit is also available on the Web page given below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=bi-58387-1&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=1814094&dlc=en
NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

OK — I’ve now have had the time to try out the new driver for 32-bit Windows Vista, and it works great — no need for the workaround.
