White Yarrow or Queen Anne’s Lace?

I know, I know, I am getting frustrated too. All I am trying to do is to get a handle on what the heck we have growing in the front yard. I did some more research on another photo I took and may have the family the flower belongs to.

Here, take a look…

I found some photos on the web and the one we have in the front yard looks like either White Yarrow or Queen Anne’s Lace (Wild Carrot). I am not sure if everything is exact, but they all sure look alike.

  1. Most likely Yarrow based on the foliage. It is easier to grow, very hardy, and grows wide in North America.

  2. queen anne’s lace always has a little dot in the center of the flower, thats how you can tell

  3. It is definately white yarrow. The leaves of yarrow are thicker and fern-like. They also have an almost medicinal smell when rubbed. (American Indians used some parts as medicine.) Queen Anne’s Lace is more delicate – both flowers and leaves. Also, Queen Anne’s flower is an umbrel – an “umbrella” so a completely round grouping of tiny flowers. And, like Aisha said, the central flower is usually much darker. Yarrow on the other hand has no specific arrangement of flowers – just randomly grouped.
    Hope it helps!

  4. I believe I have this growing on the side of my house. The roots are tubular and run deep. This plant seems very intrusive. Year after year I pull it out and it still comes back. Anyone else share this impression? I originally had daffodils, irises, daylilies, roses, johnny hump-ups, and sweet williams in this garden bed. I never planted yarrow yet somehow it keeps coming back. It’s pretty for a bit when it’s in bloom but when it isn’t it looks bushy and unruly. Not very neat and tidy for sure.
