The Ashokan Reservoir

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Wow, what a long day! If you read my previous posts about Stephanie and James’ visit, you know what the heck I am talking about.

As I mentioned before, we got a little lost on the way to our destination, but it was worth it. As we were driving to Woodstock, we happened to get a few glimpses of Ashokan Reservoir. When we first saw it, I think I said, “What the…?” It’s is a very neat place. The pass right by the New York State DEC. Their little area kind of reminded me of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The landscape, not the music. HAHA.

Anyway, I am going to keep this quick, but I just wanted to post a few photos. If you are in the area, stop by and take a break. You can also click the link above to get all the details about this cool reservoir.

Visiting Woodstock, NY – With Pictures!

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my sister, her son and I visited Woodstock, NY on Tuesday. We had a few adventures on the way there, but when we did finally make it, we had a great day.

First, let me give you a little background on where exactly Woodstock is. Ummm, it’s a little SouthWest of Albany, NY and West of Kingston, NY. It is right on the Southern border of the Catskill State Park and tucked to the SouthEast of Hunter Mountain and to the East of Phoenicia, NY. It is North of the Ashokan Reservoir.

Now, I know that I just threw a bunch of places and links in there, but I did that on purpose…I wanted you to be able to click around to see how cool of an area this is. It really is…but that’s just the location. Just wait until you see the town.

This is the Woodstock Library.

This is the Woodstock Town Hall.

Since we visited town on a Tuesday, the masses of tourists weren’t there. Most of the shops were open, so we were lucky to get some bagels and something to drink. There are tons of little shops throughout town…

…and a good number of art galleries…

Have you ever been to one of those towns were there is absolutely no rush? When we were in the bagel shop, a woman was baby talking to James. She looked up at Stephanie and said, “Hey, it’s better than working, right?”

So Woodstock is full of art and cool people. But what about the nature? Yeah…that too. There is a river that runs right through town. It’s called Tannery Brook. It has some nice waterfalls and is very clear.

Overall, this town is a bit out of the way for the average person, but no one ever said we were very average. That’s why Laura and I have been having short little conversations about how nice it would be to live in Woodstock, NY (hint, hint).

Am I an Angel?

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

My sister Stephanie and my nephew James came up to visit on Monday night. I had a plan for Tuesday. I would bring them up to Woodstock, NY (more about that in the next post).

Well, on the way there, we got a little side tracked. I took Rt.3 North to Rt.28A to Rt.28. It was a little longer than expected. When we popped out of the woods on Rt.28, I didn’t quite know where I was in relation to the next road we needed to take. Stephanie suggested that I ask for directions. Can you believe that?

We headed West on Rt.28 until I saw a stop light. I thought this was the one that went up to Woodstock. I wanted to take Rt.375, but Rt.39 looked good enough (it had a 3 in it), so we decided to head North on that. Confused? Anyhow, after a while, we decided to turn around because it looked like we were just getting deeper in the woods and things weren’t exactly looking like Woodstock.

On the way back out to Rt.28, we came to an intersection were we saw a car pulled over on the side of the road. It looked like a lady had a stick in her tire, so I pulled up behind her to help out. I asked if she would like me to change her tire and she replied, “I would LOVE it if you would change my tire.” Oh yeah, here was my chance to erase about six months worth of sins.

Let’s make the tire change story quick…I changed the tire. How’s that?

The interesting part of the story is this…the reason we stopped is because she had tons of bumper stickers on the back of her car. They were all about stopping the war and about keeping the peace and all that. I get a kick out of that. Obviously she was from the area and we were in the mood to mingle. Stephanie decided to grab a few shots of my heroism.

Now, let me tell you, if this person had bumper stickers that talked about killing people and self righteousness, we would have driven right by. Why? Because you never know what can happen when you stop to help an idiot. Also, we had the little baby in the car and we needed to take extra precautions.

As I was changing the tire, the woman mentioned about how, just yesterday, her friend told her that she needed a cell phone in case of emergency. She replied that she didn’t need one and she would rely on her fellow citizen, just like the old days. I told her about how people stink and how no one helps each other any more. She looked right at me and said, “Yeah, but you stopped.” Hmmm…I thought. Good point. Perhaps I am a little jaded. That’s what the news will do to you.

I guess it’s true that people stop to help others, still in this day and age, but this was a beautiful day on a very slow road. What if she was stuck on the side of a highway? A cell phone would help in that situation, but I think she is plenty happy without.

The Tulips are in Bloom

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

I just finished mowing the lawn. For May 2, it is kind of hot out there. This is the time of year I usually give myself a short haircut.

Anyway, I thought I would share a nice photo I just took. About a week ago, the Daffodils started to bloom, and now the tulips are coming up. There are a few more, but these are really pretty. In the Autumn, Laura a I bought 150 bulbs from Brecks. Now we will finally see what we bought.
